Welcome!
Many events occurred during the twenties that marked it as a new era. Prohibition, or the banning of alcohol use, was enforced during the twenties, which encouraged organized crime. Moreover, fundamentalism rose during the twenties. Urban cities became more secular and open, while rural areas embraced religion and tradition. This angered some Christians who wanted to live in a simple world guided by the Bible, therefore, they spread fundamentalism, which encouraged people to follow the basic truths of their religion by following the bibles literal truth and to reject secular and modern ideas. One of the most significant events that occurred as a result of fundamentalism clashing with modernism was the Scopes Trial. Even though the ideas of fundamentalism were spread, it did not take effect in urban cities as much as in the rural areas. Technological advancements continued during the twenties, changing the lives of Americans dramatically. Americans started enjoying more leisure time, higher wages, and less working hours. Radios were one of the most important technological advancements, it connected cultures together and provided entertainment as well as the latest news on what was going on in the world. Jazz also spread during the twenties, and some considered it to be the symbol of the Roaring Twenties. In fact, the twenties are sometimes referred to as the “Jazz Age.” Another event that was significant during the twenties was women’s rights. Society started treating women as equals to men rather than just housewives. Women were granted jobs that were previously offered to men only; moreover, they started having fewer children to take care of and more jobs. Starting from the twenties, women began to have an active role in society that America has never witnessed before. The rise of consumerism also took place during the twenties. Goods were produced based on the consumers’ demands rather than just producing what is needed. This led to the rise of the advertising industry. Technological advancements during that time period also contributed to the shift to consumerism. The “Roaring Twenties” were roaring indeed because of the immense changes for the way Americans live their lives.
